I enjoyed Soul Coughing more than I expected, probably because I didn't
expect to enjoy them. Ditto on the audience-rapport stuff; it was
interesting to see the frontguy (who struck me as annoying at first) get
into his role of frontguy as the show went on. And I hadn't realized how
interesting the race stuff was; they're obviously a watered-down white-funk
band, but they seemed to be poking fun at themselves, too. Gotta love Nation
of Islam references coming from 4 white boys, especially when they mix them
with Black Sabbath quotes. More than once, though, I found myself wishing
they could make their funk more smooth and organic, you know, like hiphop
for real.

Yech. Yech yech yech. Struck me as pretentious, very egotistical stuff; all
about him and none about us. The cheapo Oasis beatlesisms were horrible, and
the way the crowd piously bowed their heads to his earnest solo pluckings
made me gag.
