About ACRe

ACRe was conceived in February of 2005, by a group of activist friends wanting to create an organization that provides resources for mutual learning and collective action within the Raleigh progressive and radical communities. ACRe advocates for local social movements, ecological sanity, community economics, and self reliance through a resource center where local groups can meet.

ACRe moved into the space in September, 2005. Currently, the space supports the Mayview Housing Collective, 1304 Bikes, a Food Not Bombs kitchen, a meeting area & offices for the NC Green Party and FIST, an urban garden, and more. By connecting collective housing with the community space, ACRe blurs the line between public and private space making activism not something we do in our spare time, but something that we live. We incorporate the following items into the space to nurture sustainable culture: greywater collection, organic gardening, non-heirarchical governance, rainwater collection, energy conservation, depaving, reforesting, resistance to corporate or foundation funding, sober safe space, waste stream reclamation, community accountability, recycling, composting, raising chickens, and erosion control. ACRe is a working organization and continues to grow with input and help from members of the activist community.
