J-School Grad Students in Cyberspace is a multi-faceted research project based in two graduate courses at UNC-CH (JOMC 191 & INLS 213). The research was inspired through a strong interest in learning more about the activities and interests of graduate students in the field of journalism and mass communication throughout the U.S., and discovering the extent to which J-school graduate student life is currently represented on the World Wide Web. It is also the product of a desire to develop a WWW Home page for the UNC-CH J-School Graduate Student Association that recognizes the accomplishments and activities of J-school graduate students at UNC. Additionally, the research stems from an interest in learning more about all aspects of the information-seeking process within the context of online services, the World Wide Web and "Cyberspace."
The primary objectives of the project include:
- To locate and compile a list of the WWW home pages for all 105 AEJMC accredited schools of journalism and mass communication in the U.S.
- To search each home page (as well as other online references at each university) for any information pertaining to associations of graduate students, or activities of graduate students, in the field of journalism and mass communication.
- To record and summarize the findings, and then create an online resource archive of J-school graduate student organizations and activity throughout the U.S.
- To apply the results of the search toward the creation of an informative, sophisticated, well-designed WWW home page for the UNC-CH J-School G.S.A.
- To chronicle all aspects of the online information search process in order to write an article suitable for publication in a technology-based magazine (such as "Wired").
*The research and GSA websites will be completed for Dr. Deb Aikat's JOMC 191 course "Communication Issues in Cyberspace."
*The written report and information search article will be completed for Dr. Paul Solomon's INLS 213 course "User Perspectives in Information Systems."
