Below are listed organizations which can make referrals to businesses which sell electric cars and kits for building them or convert cars to electric. Whether an electric vehicle is more or less sustainable than its gasoline-powered counterpart is situation-specific; among other things it depends on their manufacture and your source of electricity.

N.C. Alternative Energy Corporation(P.O. Box 12699, Research Triangle Park 27709; 919/361-8000): Provides information and technical assistance and makes referrals to companies which convert cars to electric or sell electric cars. Researches electric vehicles.

Carolinas Consortium for Electric Vehicle Systems (c/o Matt Jackson, Transportation Studies, Cameron Center Rm. 276, UNC-Charlotte 28223; 704/547-3082): Consortium members include electric vehicle companies, professors, research organizations, government agencies, and others. Publishes Carolinas Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuels Newsletter which contains news, facts, upcoming events, and contact information for members and other interested groups, some of which sell and convert electric and other alternatively fueled vehicles.

Southeastern Electric Vehicle Association (c/o Lawson Huntley, P.O. Box 1025, Monroe 28111; 704/283-1025): A non-profit chapter of the Electric Automobile Association. Educates the public about electric vehicles and provides members with technical assistance on building their own vehicles. Conducts workshops and other events. Makes referrals to related businesses. Distributes the Electric Automobile Association Newsletter.
