N.C. Rural Economic Development Center (4 N. Blount St., Raleigh 27601; 919/821-1154): Develops and advocates for innovative strategies to help stimulate economic growth and job creation in N.C.'s rural areas. Published a booklet, North Carolina Rural Profile: Economic and Social Trends Affecting Rural North Carolina. The booklet includes data on employment characteristics and levels and unemployment levels; total and per capita personal income; and poverty. Data is broken down by county and presented in text, graphics, and tables. Disparities between rural and urban areas are examined.

Consumer U.S.A. Published annually by Euromonitor PIC (London, England). Contains socioeconomic and demographic information for the U.S. as a whole, as well as information on markets for specific goods and the largest firms' shares in those markets.

Cost of Living Index. Published quarterly by the American Chamber of Commerce Researcher Association (ACCRA) (P.O. Box 6749, Louisville, KY 40206-6749; 502/897-2890). Contains comparative data for 297 urban areas in the U.S. and data on average prices. Categories include grocery items, housing, utilities, transportation, and health care. For further information on cost of living, contact your local chamber of commerce.

Editor and Publisher Market Guide. Published annually by the Editor and Publisher Company (11 W. 19th St., New York, NY 10011; 212/675-4380). State Profiles section includes statistics by county on average household income, per capita income, and average disposable income.

Standard and Poor's Statistical Service: Current Statistics. Updated monthly by Standard and Poor. Contains economic statistics such as prices, sales, and production of various goods. Data is not broken down by state.

The Survey of Buying Power: Demographics U.S.A. Published annually by Sales and Marketing Management Magazine. Contains demographic and economic information for the U.S., including total retail sales for broad categories of goods. Data is broken down by state and in some cases, by county.
