Harry,
thanks - could you just add this to the paper? If you don't know how to track changes ask any secretary (if not, just put them in red).
Try to do this in the next 24h. working off of the draft I've sent you.
Peter

ps. Concerning the end note I would shorten it slightly: I am in debt to all those, especially Wheeler and Clark, whose
intellectual stimulation provided the foundation for this overview paper
of my intellectual project. I am particularly thankful for the
commentary received at the presentation of these ideas at the 2006 North
American Computing and Philosophy Conference and at the presentation
set-up by Pat Hayes at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. I
particularly in debt to Henry S. Thompson for encouraging my exploration
of these ideas, and Peter Boltuć for encouraging me to contribute this paper and having much patience for my writing

I've talked with Clark again last week and he's gotten around to
reading it right now, we should have a meeting about it next week. He
said he likes it in general and has no problem with commenting (although
he's really busy, so I have to pester him over these things). As for
Wheeler, not sure, but I got some brief comments that I'll ask him to
turn into a proper review when I see him. I am pretty sure I can get a
review out of both of them well before May. I think, based on the
comments that me and Wheeler are not quite as far apart as I thought.

1) So..I'd like to add, based on your earlier comments, this disclaimer
as a separate paragraph right after the paragraph that ends in "There is
suspicion among many of the now successful rebels against classical
artificial intelligence that "Good Old Fashioned" artificial
intelligence has not disappeared but has been instead born anew on the
Semantic Web. ":

"Note that we do not present a fully-developed philosophical theory of
the Web, which would be far out of scope, but a broad picture of the
philosophy of the Web, an endeavor that needs to be fleshed out and
thoroughly argued in other work. Yet in order to have detailed arguments
over a philosophy of the Web, a precis that relates a new developing
picture to more widely known and accepted paradigms is necessary."

2) In particular, I'd like to add this to the published version to
clarify my take on Wheeler, who is a good friend, in between "This is a
small victory at best for representations, for representations are cast
from their long-standing spotlight in classical artificial intelligence
into a secondary role in embodied cognitive science" and "Can
representations in the usual sense fit within this neo-Heideggerian
framework?

"Let me point out that in details myself and Wheeler are not as far as
we may appear, even though we have intellectual projects that are quite
far apart. One of the most thoughtful neo-Heideggerian philosophers,
Wheeler holds that decoupling could be sufficient for representation,
although not necessary since there cases of on-line intelligence where
decoupleability does not hold but can be explained by representations,
and so is far less skeptical about representations than others like
Dreyfus. While Wheeler argues for homuncularity and arbitrariness, his
task is to explain the use of internal representations in explanations
(2007). For the time being, one can be agnostic about the role of
arbitrariness and homunculnarity in explanation. What we need is a
notion of what a representation is, a definition that applies, unlike
Wheeler's, to both "internal" and "external" representations."

And as an endnote add:

"I am in debt to all those, especially Wheeler and Clark, whose
intellectual stimulation provided the foundation for this overview paper
of my intellectual project. I am particularly thankful for the
commentary received at the presentation of these ideas at the 2006 North
American Computing and Philosophy Conference and at the presentation
set-up by Pat Hayes at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. I
particularly in debt to Henry S. Thompson for encouraging my exploration
of these ideas, and am most of all debt in Peter Boltuć for allowing me
this honor to contribute to /APA Newsletter on Philosophy and Computers
/and having much patience for my writing."
