The 1958 Intervention
-
Details the landing of
a Marine Battalion Landing Team in Beirut in 1982, as part of a
MultiNational Force, in the wake of the Israeli invasion to drive out the
PLO -- first to ensure safe passage for PLO forces evacuating Lebanon,
then to provide a minimum of stability for the Lebanese government
following the massacres at the Sabra and Shatilla refugee camps and the
assasination of the Lebanese president. The intervention eventually
culminated in the terrorist bombings of the US Embassy in Beirut in April 1983,
and the Marine BLT Headquarters at Beirut International Airport in October 1983,
and President Reagan's withdrawal of the Marines shortly thereafter.
