Press Release No. 825
Steady progress is being made by naval activities on Okinawa in repairing typhoon damage.
All naval personnel in the Okinawa area are now under shelter and are otherwise being properly cared for. Some food supplies have been unloaded and abundant food stocks are in ships and in the area so that no serious shortage is anticipated.
All naval personnel have been engaged in clearing away the debris, evacuating and caring for the wounded and in putting up structures and other facilities so that essential military operations can be resumed. Hospital planes from the Marianas helped with the speedy evacuation of injured personnel.
Since the typhoon struck last week, 7,500 high-point military personnel have been processed on the island and evacuated on the Navy's "magic carpet" program of returning military personnel to the United States for discharge.
