organic pork in Switzerland
An article in our local popular ag press - Ontario Farmer - recently
informed readers that consumers/shoppers in Migros, a large Swiss
supermarket chain, had said they would prefer to buy meat raised in a
"natural and healthy" way, but then declined to pay for it. The
article, written by a provincial swine specialist here, stated that
the chain had been forced to reduce its prices twice in 1995, with
some prospects for a complete loss of the "bonus" which was to have
been paid to organic producers. The bonus had started at US$0.40/lb
carcass weight, then dropped to 0.28, then to 0.12.
I would be interested in hearing from those of you who may be
familiar with this situation to determine what has been happening,
and if the texture given to the situation in the above article is, in
fact, correct. Thanks in advance. Ann
