Proposal 2: Karin-Marie
I'm attaching sketches of my concept. The main ideas were:
-
3 sunken containers
-not seeking "South African" architecture - neutral containers for objective rendition of the history of SA's people
-1st container (pre-colonial) entered by walkways gradually cutting into the hill - re-entering time
-2nd container (Apartheid history) becomes darker, more oppressing
-visitor emerge from 2nd container into gathering space, which is also the memorial
- memorial is to suggest that freedom is only free within boundaries - boundaries of a large space are suggested, but space inside is unobstructed
- from there visitors enter post-apartheid container - it is open-ended and looks towards the city
- exit onto platform overlooking city, possibly a sheet of water running over it (cleansing), space to write something/add to museum etc.
- trees to remember those who died im the struggle - dead trees vs. live trees
Criticism:
Excavations into the hillside will be enviromentally destructive due to the high ecological sensitivity of the site and should probably be avoided.
Note: Brief specifically states that the proposal has to illustrate how the design has a uniquely South African character.
