COURSE SYLLABUS

Description
This studio will be conducted in two innovative modes of teaching design: 1.  The “Internet Studio” (istudio) or Virtual Design Studio (VDS); 2.  “Half and Half initiative at FIU.   In simple words “istudios” are architectural design workshops that connects remote participants using digital communication technologies.  “Istudios” explore the asynchronous and synchronous techniques in design collaboration, in which different participants and large groups of reviewers from around the world can participate.

Second, this studio has been selected to be part of the FIU “Half and Half” initiative, a pioneering effort in distance education at FIU.  The goal of the initiative is to teach half of the course online.  Under this mode we will attempt after the third week of the semester to conduct only one weekly session in campus and maintain the rest of the communication over the Internet.
This studio focuses on the architectural design of a project of more than 50,000 square feet.  The main purpose of Design 7 is to be an exploratory design studio, a studio that allows students to explore design skills, new production processes and technology.  The specific program of the studio subject is been defined with the other participant Universities in Buenos Aires, London, Berlin, Miami and Santiago.

Co- and Prerequisite
- A Good understanding of CAD and imaging software, and very good disposition to work with new digital technologies will be required for A. Andia's section of Design 7.
-  In order to improve digital skills students in this studio will be encouraged to enroll to the Computer Practice course (Prof. Kevin Smith) in the first week of class.
-  Students entering Design 7 must have taken and passed Design 6 with a grade of C or better.
-  Please e-mail the instructor in you have problems meeting these requirements: alfredoandia@yahoo.com

Meeting Times
T-TH 2.00 to 4.45 PM.  There will be joint sessions with the school of architecture participating in the Internet Studio 2000.  It is expected that students can attend to those pre-arranged meetings on Thursday morning of every 4 or 6 weeks.

Course Evaluation
Students will be evaluated upon performance in the projects. While a satisfactory grade in the course may be attained by the completion of all work required to the satisfaction of the professor, individual initiative and investigation of design and research issues that extend beyond the basic requirements are strongly encouraged.
Mid Term: 35 % of Final Grade (Mid Term 25 % + Pre-Mid Term evaluation 10 %)
Final Exam: 65 % of Final Grade (Final Exam 50 % + Pre-Final evaluation 15 %)

Grades
94-100= A 87-89= B+ 80-83= B- 74-76= C 67-69= D+ 60-63= D-
90-93= A- 84-86= B 77-79= C+ 70-73= C- 64-66= D 0-59= F

Class Standards
Attendance and class participation are required at all class meetings (see Course Schedule). Four (4) unexcused absences automatically result in a failing grade for the course. In the event that you miss a class, you are responsible for all material covered. No late work will be accepted.  Being absent at a final review will result in a failing grade.

Student Work
The School of Architecture reserves the right to retain any and all student work for the purpose of record, exhibition and instruction.  All students are encouraged to photograph and/or copy all work for personal records prior to submittal to instructor.
