Friday's Jazz Festival events kicked off with a Symposium on Coltrane in Carolina. Speakers from across the country gathered Friday morning to discuss the life and work of jazz legend, John Coltrane. In their opening remarks, the chair people of the symposium, James Ketch, Annette Wright, Gerald Horne and Soyini Madison described their own work and involvement with the event. The first guest speaker was Lewis Porter, an Associate Producer of Music at Rutgers University, who is currently working on a book about Coltrane's heritage and early life. He traced Coltrane all the way back to his great-grandparents and then proceded to tell the story that lead up to the birth of Coltrane and finally to the birth of his music. The day ended with an open panel discussion. Text and Photos by Jennifer Fox |
