The North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra has established a solid reputation as one of the nation's leading repertory jazz orchestras. Performing a vast repertoire which includes Ellington, Basie, Kenton, Goodman, Lunceford, James, Dorsey, Strayhorn, and many others, the NCJRO has energized jazz communities across the state of North Carolina. In 1995, the NCJRO performed a Concert of Sacred Music by Duke Ellington at Duke University Chapel. The program was taped and later rebroadcast statewide by University of North Carolina Television.

In conjunction with the Jazz Foundation of North Carolina, the NCJRO has commissioned new works by William Fritz, Gregg Gelb, Ira Wiggins, and James Hile, presented jazz educational programs to over 5000 school children, and collaborated with the 15-501 Ballet for performances of Ellington's The Nutcracker Suite. The NCJRO, in partnership with the people of North Carolina, is both preserving and creating the jazz tradition for generations to come.
