About

At metalab, which is what we call the office that runs ibiblio.org, we do more than a little bit of work with media. For one thing, we provide streaming audio for a number of North Carolina radio stations like WUNC, our state-wide NPR affiliate, and WCPE, The Classical Station, which has listeners all over the globe. We digitize, compress, and stream video for Folkstreams.net in addition to hosting their website. We have also been filming and distributing the ibiblio speaker series since Lawrence Lessig came to talk in 1998.

We have been using commercial software for much of the video capturing, editing and encoding required by these efforts.  If you hadn’t noticed, ibiblio.org has as strong comittment to open source software (OSS).  We’re proud to provide most of our streaming services via OSS.  I’m looking into how I could use OSS for more of the media creation activities we do around metalab.  The theory is, the more people use open source media production tools, the better those tools will become.  Eventually everyone benefits.

    Greetings,

While looking through your reviews of video editing software, I didn’t see any mention of KDEnlive. This has become my standard video editor. I recently wrote a brief review of it here:

    Keep up the good work!
