GSA Activities

As part of the GSA's mission to serve graduate students' social, academic, and pre-professional interests, the GSA hosts a number of regular activities, including:

Research Roundtable

The Research Roundtable is a series of occasional gatherings aimed at providing useful information for graduate students. Coordinated by students, the events cover a range of issues, from introductory discussions at the start of the fall semester to later workshops on finding jobs. JOMC faculty members often generously volunteer their expertise by leading or joining discussions. RR events generally are located in Carroll Hall facilities.

Recent topics of Research Roundtable events include:

  • Making the adjustments to grad student life at UNC
  • Secrets of making sense of the Davis grad library
  • Writing effective literature reviews
  • Getting published in academic journals
  • Preparations for presenting papers at academic conferences
  • How to find the best courses outside the J school
  • Tools for impressing people and finding jobs, in the field or academia

Weekly Happy Hours

Every Thursday evening students and faculty from the J-school come together in a more social setting for happy hour at one of Chapel Hill's many bars. To find out where this week's happy hour will be, keep on eye on your email or send a message to dmundy@email.unc.edu.

Intramural Sports Teams

Each semester students from the J-school participated in a number of UNC sponsored intramural sporting events.
