Notes from November 2004 GPSF MeetingThe Graduate and Professional Student Association met once again on Tuesday, 9 November, to hash out some biz for you. I'll keep my notes brief and occasionally vague, but here are some highlights. Among the points of interest: POPES? NOPE. The grad senate voted almost unanimously in favor of a resolution opposing UNC's "accepting monies from Art and John William Pope for the creation of a program in 'studies in Western Cultures.'" In short, the attitude was that while a proposed $12 million dollar donation from the group might be useful, any strings attached regarding the benefactors' documented antagonism toward diversity- promoting programs and curriculum are unacceptable. The idea is that the resolution has no teeth on its own, but may impact decisions by higher-ups. YOUR CENTER: A new graduate center is set to open this next term. What will it be for? Offices? Study areas? We don't know, but a committee was formed to figure it out. LOGO SHORTAGE: The GPSF needs a logo, and they're putting together some sort of contest to get one. Pass the word along to graphic design students, perhaps? RAMBLIN': The GPSF is working on developing an established souce of funds for individual grad student travel -- it passed a bill toward establishing a committee to do this. Might be a source for strapped travellers in the future. FUNDING: Funding of a Valentine's Day event for a group of UNC hospital patients ($400) was approved, as was $200 (of $700 requested) for a dinner held by another Med student group for a department- related event. A request of 1600 smackeroos for conference travel by the same group was denied. Another request for funding of Insight Out, a community service-related newsletter distributed to medical and public health students, was sent back to committee for more elaboration. For more details on any of these matters, contact me and I'll spill more beans. And that's the big news from the GPSF in November. Want more? Wait for the action-packed December meeting. Jimmy |
