What ever happened in Haw River, North Carolina?
- In 1781 Cornwallis' men appropriated grain and flour from Jacob
Trollinger's mill as they passed through on their way to the Battle of
Guilford Courthouse. In response, Trollinger sent two sons and a slave
to join in the fight against the British.
- Washington Duke, founder of the tobacco and financial empire, took
his second wife from Haw River.
- Benjamin Trollinger, who built and operated the Granite Mill,
convinced the North Carolina Railroad to take a route passing near his
business on its way from Goldsborro to Charlotte.
- In 1891, Thomas Holt became the first of three governors of North
Carolina who lived in the community.
- Early in the twentieth century Haw River resident Charlie Poole
wrote and played music that helped establish old time country music.
- The Cone mills there produced more corduroy than any other plant in
the world.
