Background: this Scottish lullaby first appeared in print within Friar Allan MacDonald's Catholic hymnal written in Gaelic in 1893. The tune was popular in oral tradition before that. It is traditionally sung as part of the Midnight Mass ceremony in the Outer Hebrides islands, the full lyrics containing 29 verses.
