Background: this traditional Irish dance tune was first published in P.W. Joyce's 1873 book "Ancient Irish Music". It has been published in many books since under many different names, a good indication of its wide popularity. Titles from various sources include The Humors of Mullinafauna, Nancy Hines, The Little Bag of Meal, The Horse Under The Stairs, The Mangled Badger, The Stoat That Ate Me Sandals, several Gaelic names I will not attempt to pronouce, and one title too profane to mention in polite company. Most Irish-playing musicians today know it as Banish Misfortune. It is a popular tune in many Irish-themed holiday albums.
