Background: this is an old and popular tune, referenced as early as 1597 by William Shakespear in his play The Merry Wives of Windsor. Only later was it used as the musical basis for popular carol What Child Is This? written in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix. Variations of this tune have been used in many different, and odd, settings: during the ending credits of the popular television show Lassie, as a tune sometimes played by ice cream trucks, as a battle march by the 7th Battalion (London Regiment) during World War 1, and as background music for public education certification exams given in Hong Kong. Our arrangement honors the musical modality of Shakespearean times, and may sound different from what you have heard before.
