I created this poster for the SIGGRAPH 2002 poster competition. To create the poster, I first photographed a number of trees and scanned in those photos. Then, I hand-gathered acorns, leaves, pine cones, and berries from many different types of trees -- and I scanned in these tree "pieces" as separate images. I then brought each scanned element into Photoshop separately and used multiple layers to apply a variety of effects, to each element I brought in. I adjusted the opacity so that one can see through the layers. The theme of the competition was "trees", in whatever application we chose to use them. I wanted my poster to be inspirational, showing the different kinds of tree seeds: berries, acorns, pine cones, etc. -- and convey the image of each seed dreaming of what it might become when it grows up. It was also important to me that all kinds of trees be represented, each beautiful in its own way. And finally, I used a multi-colored tree to symbolize once again, the beauty in variety. I hoped that this poster would be symbolic of the dreams of different children, each special and different, each with his or her own future that is greater and more beautiful than anyone could imagine...because the sky it the limit! |
