National Consortium for Teaching about Asia


With funding from the Freeman Foundation, five university centers for East Asian Studies have formed the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. 


The purpose of the Consortium is to work with states and school districts to enhance instruction on Asia  in the curriculum, especially most often required world history, social studies and geography courses. Since 1998, the Consortium has sponsored seminars for 1000 teachers in 17 states.


The national coordinating centers for the Consortium are Columbia University, the University of Washington,the University of Colorado, Indiana University, and Five College Center for East Asian Studies at Smith College.  Columbia University will serve as the coordinating center for the regional NCTAN.


NCTAN will conduct a series of intensive sessions on East Asia for middle and high school teachers who are teaching about East Asia in the context of; Arts, Social Studies, World History, Geography, World Literatures and Cultures. The NCTAN 2001 seminar Academic Director is Dr. Louisa Kilgroe, Administrative Director is Bogdan T. Leja and Teacher Liaison is Susanna Bryant, Phillips Middle School.

The University Center for International Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announces the formation of NCTAN  which is partnered with Columbia University and funded by the Freeman Foundation. The Japan Center at North Carolina State University, the Curriculum in Asian Studies (UNC-CH), the Center for International Understanding and Duke University Asia/Pacific Studies Institute advise and support NCTAN.
