2001-02 Teachers Study Tour to East Asia |
The NCTAN Alumni Outreach Program is
funded through the generous support of the Freeman Foundation for a period of three years (2006--09). The grant
provides steipend payment of $200 for NCTA Alumni who provide a presentation
on topics relating to East Asia. As part of our effort to promote greater
involvement and build learning about this region, we also encourage teachers
to speak at conferences and promote NCTA Seminars at educational events. The grant will support payment of conference
registration fees, some travel and lodging and if needed substitute teacher
payment fees. Participating
teachers are asked to work with their local NCTA Seminar Director and inform
about possible activities in advance. |
North Carolina Teaching Asia Network (NCTAN) Alumni Outreach |
The North Carolina
Teaching Asia Network (NCTAN), a program supported by the Freeman Foundation and represented at the
national level by National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) Columbia
University, has completed the advanced training of 259 teachers on China,
Japan, and Korea. Eighteen of these
teachers participated in a three-week summer immersion tour of China and
Japan. An additional 12 teachers also
completed Duke University’s NCTAN program in 1999-2000. Together, teachers who completed the NCTA
Seminar are an extraordinary resource for promoting knowledge on East Asia in
North Carolina schools and K-12 classrooms, especially in rural and
underprivileged schools that are far removed from the major universities. NCTA
partners who are part of the Columbia University effort are also eligible to
have their seminar alumni participate in outreach activities. Teachers in our rural
schools who were unable to participate in the NCTA seminars and students who
otherwise would receive limited exposure to Asia will benefit from the wealth
of personal experience, novel teaching techniques and hands-on materials developed
by NCTA alumni. By having middle and
high school teachers and university faculty provide in-class presentations to
students and focused workshops on East Asia to teachers FREE OF CHARGE, this outreach program aims
to relive the burden of locating expertise on East Asia while rewarding NCTA
Alumni for their participation |
