Implementation Plan Due by February 21, the implementation plan should include the following:
The implementation plan should reflect what you have learned in the NCTAN seminar. This does not mean that it cannot build on what you are already doing. But the plan should include some new information acquired as a result of the lectures by scholars, the handouts, and the interaction among teachers that the seminar provides. It should reflect more innovative ways of covering familiar territory--the building of the Great Wall, the disruptions of the Cultural Revolution, Korea's role as an intermediary between China and Japan or Japan's ability to modernize virtually overnight. We would hope that it would also indicate a greater appreciation of new technology such as the internet as a valuable tool for classroom teaching. You need to begin thinking about your implementation plan now. You may choose to focus on one particular aspect of Asian culture or geography as opposed to literature or art. You may take a comparative approach to East Asia, comparing and contrasting the responses of Japan and China to the West for example or the evolution of Buddhism as it spread from China through Korea to Japan. You may do a self-designed web quest, identifying sites that will take your students to primary sources. There is no one model for your implementation plan, but hopefully your participation in the seminar will have led to a more thoughtful approach to Asian values, culture, and traditions. Whatever you choose as the basis for your implementation plan, it should reflect as much as possible, an authentic Asian voice. The books and handouts used in the seminar have primary or documentary sources that give ample examples of the Asian perspective. In a more practical vein, you also need to give some thought as to how your plan can be integrated into your already crowded curriculum as well as what materials you would like to purchase for your school. Completing 30 contact hours and submitting a printed or emailed (preferred) as attachment implementation plan by February 21st are the two main requirements for completing the NCTAN seminar. Copies of your implementation plans will be sent to our partner at the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia, Columbia University. They may also be presented in some form to the Freeman Foundation. During our final session on May 10th a number of teachers will have time to present their plans to the group. In order to help us effectively evaluate the NCTAN program, its administration and speakers, you will also be asked to fill out a final evaluation form. This will serve as a guideline in structuring the 2002-03 NCTAN Program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. |
