National Consortium for Teaching about Asia With funding from the Freeman Foundation,
five university centers for East Asian Studies have formed the National
Consortium for Teaching about Asia. The purpose of the Consortium is to work with states and school districts
to enhance instruction on Asia in the
curriculum, especially most often required world history, social studies and
geography courses. The national coordinating centers for the Consortium are
Columbia University,
the
University
of Washington,the
University of Colorado,
Indiana University, and
Five College Center for
East Asian Studies at Smith College. Columbia University will serve as the
coordinating center for the regional NCTAN. NCTAN is a partner to Columbia University and will conduct a series of
intensive sessions on East Asia for middle and high school teachers in the
context of; Arts, Social Studies, World History, Geography, World Literatures
and Cultures. The NCTAN 2004-05 Seminar will be limited to 25
North Carolina teachers. We encourage participation by two or more teachers
per school. In service teachers must also teach about East Asia and plan on
completing 35 hours of instruction. It is most important that the workshop
schedule is reviewed and plans made to attend the three Saturday sessions.
Participants will also rate each workshop through written evaluation
collected at the end of the session. |
