The University Center for International Studies, the School of Education, and the Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have joined with Fayetteville State University and Cumberland County Schools to continue an in depth examination of issues relating to multicultural education that were initially brought forth in our first joint conference on June 15th and 16th of 1996. The conference will focus on our immigrant and native roots which form the basis for our American multicultural society.

"Native Americans, Hispanic Americans: Identities, Languages, Ethnicity: Implications on Teaching"

Native Americans continue to be delegated to the back pages of American history and stereotypes coming out of Hollywood have done much to influence our perceptions and damage the cultural heritage of various Indian nations. Hispanic Americans comprise the quickest growing minority group in American society, yet no differentiation is made for the rich and diverse social fabric that makes up that ethnic group.

Participants will discuss the importance and the role of immigrants in local and national community building. How can ethnic groups help to shape and invigorate American society? They will explore the positive and negative impact of newly arrived immigrants and the role of educating their children for a future role in a complex American society.

B. "Media Representation of Ethnic Groups and Impact on Perception and Development of Stereotypes"

Participants will discuss the role of the media and and how it shapes their view toward the newly arriving immigrants. They will discuss their own perceptions and the efforts they have initiated to increase their understanding of ethnic groups regularly mentioned in the media.
