Expressions for Flux

If the water flows perpendicular to the surfaces of area A (see above figure), then the amount of water through the surface per second, or the flux , can be expressed as , where is the density of water. This is because the water flow sweeps out a rectangular box of side length v and with front and back faces that are of area A.
