How to Use the Module

This section contains a brief overview of how to use the module.

Navigating

Navigation Bars

To help guide you through the module, navigation bars are placed at the top of many of the pages in the module. There is one at the top of this page. (They are also included at the bottom of some longer pages so you don't have to return to the top.) Four graphical buttons marked "Next", "Up", "Previous", and "Index" provide links as does the line of text underneath them. "Next" and "Previous" move you to the next and previous logical page in the module if there is one. (Some pages do not have these, as there may not be a page that must come before or after that page.)

The "Up" link moves you up one logical stage in the hierarchy of the module. For example, right now you are in the section explaining the module, which you got to from the main page of the module. Therefore, the "Up" link will return you to the main page of the module.

The "Index" link takes you to an index for the entire module. The index has a listing for every page in the Lake pollution module. It is not a good place to start the module from, but it is helpful if you want to get someplace you have been before quickly.

Using Your Browser

Since this module is on the World Wide Web, your web browser will provide you with some simple navigation aids. For example, you can use the "Back" button on your browser to return to the last page you came from. Therefore, you can always find your way back even if the page you are on does not have a "Previous" link in the navigation bar.

We also suggest using bookmarks to mark where you left off in a lesson or exercise if you need to stop for a while. This keeps you from having to start from the beginning each time.

Hyperlinks

From time to time, you will see some text in a passage hilighted like this text. This hilighted text is a hyperlink, usually to more information about the text. For example, if you ran across a reference in this module to an impulse input function, it will be hilighted just as it is here. The link goes to a page with detailed information about the impulse input function. When you are done, you must use the "Back" button on your browser to return, because of course you could have come to this page from anywhere in the module that an impulse input function is mentioned, so there is no navigation bar on this explanatory page. [See "Using Your Browser" above.]

Using the Applets

This module includes several applets on the web pages. In order for these to work, your browser must support Java(tm). Explanation on how to use each applet is included where it is used. The heart of the module in fact is the lake simulator applet, which allows you to simulate lake pollution scenarios using the mathematical models we develop in this module.
