The Gradient in Steady State Heat Conduction II

Abstract

In the Heat Conduction I module the differential equations derived were all of first order. In this module, the equations are of second order and arise in a variety of applications. It is shown that problems involving heat conduction with internal sources and sinks lead to second order equations. Several applications are studied.

Objectives

  1. To formulate problems in one dimensional steady state heat conduction that require the solution of a second order ordinary differential equation.
  2. To generalize these problems in terms of dimensionless variables and parameters, and to clarify the meaning, importance and usefulness of the dimensionless parameters.
