IBM techexplorer Plug-In
Project Links Strategy for Displaying Math Notation on the Web
Project Links is participating in a field test of IBM's techexplorer Hypermedia Browser plug-in. The techexplorer is a plug-in for Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer, enabling those browsers to display documents marked up using a well-defined subset of TeX and LaTeX and making it possible to easily publish mathematical and scientific material on the Web.
Our strategy is to use Javascript functions to code mathematical expressions as TeX and LaTeX input within our web pages. The Javascript determines whether techexplorer is available; if so, it embeds a techexplorer instance, and if not, it embeds a WebEQ applet.Another possibility is to write entire pages in LaTeX. Those pages then have the ability to be intepreted by client browsers who have the plug-in installed, enabling end users to have a good deal of control over the display of the mathematical expressions such as size of the displayed expression, for example. This cannot be used for pages containing applets, because techexplorer cannot embed applets.
