[nafex] Re: Plum Bloom Dates & Pest Resistance

Here is another small peice of the Jap/Am plum bloom puzzle: here in
Madison, WI, zone 5 Superior blooms first, then Waneta, then Prunus
americana. This was just one year of info, the blooms did not
overlap, as soon as one stopped the next began, over a period of
about 15 days if I recall. Superior is supposed to be a good
pollenizer but it certainly would not pollenize Waneta, at least not
last year. It made semse to me that the variety considered to be the
most tender to cold bloomed first followed by the most resistant to
cold. Perhaps this same trend occurs with other varieties in which
case Toka would be an early bloomer. (Is it?)
Kevin Bradley.
There was some writing on this subject in the most recent Pomona, not
conclusive in my opinion, at least as far as bloom times. Frank Foltz
of Northwind Nursery might know also. He is at northwind9@juno.com or
612 389 6920. I would be curious to hear what you learn.
