Re: [nafex] liberty apple

Gala is one of the widely sold apples in our supermarkets on the Oregon
coast.
It is a pretty apple in the stores but not very tasty in my tests.
It also seems to lean toward being mealy when very ripe.
At least in our stores.
I have a tree that is 10 years old and never had an apple ripen on it,
so I can't tell how a real one ripened on the tree would taste.
In comtrast I have a graft of Honeycrisp that is 2 yaers ols and had 3
apples set on it this year. Picked one early and it was very good.
Also have a Prima 2 year graft with 3 apples. Picked one yesterday and
it was not quite ripe but still a lot better than the store Galas
In general I find the store apples only give one a general idea of the
real quality of the fruit. They must all be picked unripe and stored to
make them (edible?).
