[nafex] flavor is sacrificed

To the list:

At times on this list, the purpose of NAFEX has been discussed--whether it
is to share tips on growing fruit or whether it is to uphold high standards
and encourage fruit varieties that exhibit the best flavor--or both.

An article in this morning's Sunday Oregonian pointed out the commercial
pressure to sacrifice flavor. It tells how Oregon growers can't find a
market for their peppermint and strawberry crops because less flavorful
varieties can be imported at lower costs by the big toothpaste and yogurt
and ice cream processors. The result is that crop acreage is diminished and
consumers are left with inferior products that may have been artificially
enhanced in processing.

I don't want to quote extensively because of possible copyright
infringement, but I recommend the article, which is online at the
Oregonian's web site today.

The URL for the article itself is a very long one, but it can be accessed
with the newspaper's URL:
