[NAFEX] Plum Curculio
Claude:
I have been fighting plum curculio for many years, and only recently
appear to be gaining some ground. They seldom damage more than one
apple in a cluster now, but that number used to be three or four.
Imidan is the only thing I have found effective against this pest (I
have not tried Surround). But I spray immediately after petal fall, and
on a 6-7 day schedule for the following four weeks. After that, either
the skins toughen up or the plum curculio dies out, since I seldom see
further damage, and discontinue use of Imidan. The PC also attacks my
peaches, apricots and pears, both Asian and European, so it goes in my
cover spray for all those fruits. In fact, the only thing they don't
bother is cherries; that job is assigned to the cherry fly.
I am thinning now, and those few fruits showing PC damage are the first
to come off, along with scab, if any. Don't see much scab at all this
year. I am using a 70WP formulation of Imidan, and it doesn't take much
of it in my 4 gal. backpack to do the job. I have concluded it is
better to use a more dilute solution and spray more frequently early in
the season, since the PC seems to be around all the time at some level.
