Re: [SANET-MG] Question on Bt corn
Hi Wytze,
Along with the corn borer resistant maize there is a rootworm resistant
Bt maize and there are strains bearing both genes stacked
Rootworm is much more prevalent and damaging in mid western USA and in
Ontario and Quebec than is borer.I met several Ontario farmers who went
to their seed providers to learn that there was no non-GM corn available
at the time of spring planting and they must grow GM borer resistant
corn or not have any seed. Maize is hybrid so seed must be bought each
year because saved seeds lead to undesirable segregation. On top of that
farmers in Ontario and Quebec normally have to obtain bank loans to
plant each year, Banks like the Royal Bank tend to be intrusive and are
easily bamboozled by company reps who insist that Bt maize is the only
viable thing to plant. It is difficult to impossible to argue with
intrusive bankers.

Dear all,
I have a question on Bt corn which I hope someone can help clarify.
In a report from Union of Concerned Scientists from 2002 they say that
the European Corn borer is a pest in only 10% of the maize area.
If that is true, than why is now 61% of US corn Bt-corn?
Are the seedcompanies not selling good non-Bt corn anymore or why is
this?
Thanks for any help.
