Links to Web Sites Useful to Plant Taxonomists

The following is a brief listing of other sites on the WWWeb that are related to Systematics in general as well as the systematics, taxonomy, and evolutionary biology of plants. As always, this page will be continually updated as new sites appear and disappear. If you know of other useful sites that should be considered for listing, send the URL to me, Dr. Nickrent.

General

1. The Tree of Life is used by those interested in locating information about a particular group of organisms, by biologists seeking identification keys, figures, phylogenetic trees, and other systematic information for a group of organisms, and by educators teaching about organismal diversity. The site was designed by David Maddison, Wayne Maddison, and Katja Schulz and is continually evolving as new data are entered. 2. TreeBASE. is a relational database of phylogenetic information sponsored by the NSF, Harvard University Herbaria, and the University of California, Davis. TreeBASE stores phylogenetic trees and the data matrices used to generate them from published research papers.
   3. NCBI Taxonomy Browser. Allows access to molecular data on all living organisms via a taxonomic hierarchy.
4. ITIS. Integrated Taxonomic Information System. Allows one to: locate scientific name and other information for a taxon, generate reports, extract scientific name and other associated data from ITIS, download data, load data to your office/home site, compare taxonomy/nomenclature, match your list of taxa to the ITIS Database, submit data to the ITIS database, access the Taxonomic Workbench and download the Workbench software.

Botanical Systematics, Taxonomy, Evolution

1. Land Plants Online. This website, developed by Dan Nickrent and Karen Renzaglia (SIUC), provides a wealth of information on all green plant groups with a focus on the phylogenetic relationships of basal land plants. Included is information on all vascular and nonvascular plants such as phylum descriptions, hundreds of photographs (including many previously unpublished SEM and TEM images), life cycle descriptions with hyperlinked text, bibliographic references, names and addresses of botanical experts (arranged according to organism groups), comparisons among existing molecular and morphological phylogenetic hypotheses, and links to a variety of other web sites that relate to land plant evolution, phylogeny and taxonomy. 2. The Green Plant Phylogeny Research Coordination Group. The co-PIs of this DOE/NSF/USDA - funded project are Mark A. Buchheim, Brent D. Mishler, and Russell L. Chapman. Its purpose is to facilitate or initiate interaction between distinct research groups that have independent foci yet entail some aspect of green plant phylogeny or systematics. The site has a number of "DAMs" (Data Availability Matrices) and address lists of members. 3. Systematics Servers. From the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Connecticut. Very useful- lists taxonomic and phylogenetic information, phylogeny software, taxonomic information on specific groups, nomenclature, interactive identification software, collections mangagement software, bibliographies, resources for plant systematists, and floras and Atlases Online. Maintained by Kent Holsinger. 4. Tools and Resources for Systematics Research. Maintained by R. Fogel at the University of Michigan, it provides atlases or electronic maps of fungi and plants, herbaria and museums, nomenclatural resources, on-line keys, organizations, phylogenetic programs, place name directories, specimen databases, taxonomist directories, WWW mycology resources and WWW plant resources. The Virtual Foliage Home Page. This site, maintained at the University of Wisconsin, Department of Botany, contains a collection of over 4,700 images of vascular plants. 5. The Families of Flowering Plants This site was constructed by L. Watson and M. M. Dallwitz. It contains description of families and links to illustrations.
   6. Flowering Plant Gateway at Texas A & M University Much useful information about plant families.
7. Cronquist's System. Phylogenetic arrangement of angiosperms according to Cronquist (1981, 1988), arranged by James Reveal (Univ. Maryland).
   8. Dahlgren's System. Phylogenetic arrangement of angiosperms according to Dahlgren (1983) arranged by James Reveal (Univ. Maryland)
   9. Thorne's System. Phylogenetic arrangement of angiosperms according to Thorne (1992) arranged by James Reveal (Univ. Maryland)
10. Vascular Plant Families and Genera. Organized by Kew Botanic Gardens, this is an extremely useful resource for those wishing complete lists of genera for ferns, fern allies, gymnosperms and angiosperms. 11. Plant Taxonomists Online. Maintained by Jane Mygatt, this is a compilation of names, addresses, e-mail addresses, etc. of plant taxonomists worldwide. 12. Internet Directory for Botany. Maintained by R. Lampinen, Botanical Museum, Finnish Museum of Natural History. A well-organized site for a diverse assemblage of botanical information. 13. OmniCyber Key to Flowering Plants. This is an interactive, online key to a large number of angiosperm families. The classification system is somewhat outdated as are some of the distribution maps that accompany the family descriptions. The information that is keyed in for some of the families may also be erroneous, thus leading to incorrect determinations. For example, the information on Balanophoraceae indicates "often parasitic" when in fact all members are holoparasites. In other words, use at your own risk!

Taxon-Specific Web Sites

1. The Parasitic Plant Connection. Developed by Dan Nickrent, this site provides information on all parasitic flowering plants. Includes lists of 230 genera for all 18-22 families, family descriptions, distribution maps, hundreds of color photographs with legends, bibliographic references, and links to information on DNA sequence data. 2. Rosaceae Home Page. Developed by Ken Robertson (Illinois Natural History Survey), this page "fills the purposeful gap" that exists in Digital Flowers for this family. 3. Carnivorous Plant Database. Developed and maintained by Rick Walker, this is a splendid resource for those interested in those curious plants that have taken on a heterotrophic existence.
   4. The Orchid Weblopedia. "Quite possibly the best orchid resource on the web."

Systematics Software

1. Phylogeny Programs. This site is maintained by Joe Felsenstein at the University of Washington, Seattle. Lists (and describes) over 100 phylogeny packages and 5 free servers. An extremely comprehensive and useful site for those who think PAUP and PHYLIP are the only packages out there!
   2. Phylogenetic Analysis Computer Programs. List compiled by the Maddisons. Similar to the one done by J. Felsenstein.
3. Parsimony Analysis Software. Compiled by the International Willi Hennig Society. Many programs downloadable from this site. Cute animations! 4. DELTA. DEscription Language for TAxonomy is a flexible format for encoding taxonomic descriptions for computer processing. It can be used to produce natural-language descriptions, keys, classifications, and systems for interactive identification and information retrieval. 5. PANKEY is a package of programs that provide specialised tools for problems of diagnosis or identification in biology or medicine. The programs are designed to process descriptive data that are presented in DELTA format (above) and generate output suitable for use when preparing monographs, handbooks, floras or faunas. The same data can be used in the interactive identification system also included in the package. The programs were written by R. Pankhurst (r.pankhurst@rbge.org.uk).

  Analysis Software</A>. Compiled by the International Willi Hennig
  Society. Many programs downloadable from this site. Cute animations!

  DEscription Language for TAxonomy is a flexible format for encoding
  taxonomic descriptions for computer processing. It can be used
  to produce natural-language descriptions, keys, classifications,
  and systems for interactive identification and information retrieval.
  <LI><A HREF="http://www.rbge.org.uk/pankey.html";><B>PANKEY</B></A>

  is a package of programs that provide specialised tools for problems
  of diagnosis or identification in biology or medicine. The programs
  are designed to process descriptive data that are presented in
  DELTA format (above) and generate output suitable for use when
  preparing monographs, handbooks, floras or faunas. The same data
  can be used in the interactive identification system also included
  in the package. The programs were written by R. Pankhurst (r.pankhurst@rbge.org.uk).
