I was just chatting with a friend who is a
firefighter. We were talking about
AACT, the microbs and the sprayers.
We were just discussing this same subject of how spraying would probably
kill the little guys worse so possibly than by hitting the leaf surface. He was saying that for work he attended a clinic on handling
mass crisis and weapons of mass destruction – the speaker was talking about how
the fear of airborne bacteria sprayed from crop dusters was less of a concern
than originally thought – because of the way they would be sprayed and how the
mechanics of spraying would result in low survival numbers of the
bacteria. No idea if this is true
as it seems that they could maybe just dump it out of an open hose just as
well, but…. It seemed to fit into what we are discussing here with
sprayers and how they affect microbes. Would be interesting to get Doc E’s angle on this. I remember talking to you about this at
the ICTC meeting and you suggested someone should try testing before and then
after spraying to show the effect sprayers have on a given tea sample. I meant to ask you then, but has this
not yet been tested in the scientific community? Seems like a costly test for the individual user, but one
that is important to all involved in AACT. This may be another place for us to donate to the ICTC so
that we could, as a group, accomplish such tests? We could kick in some small monetary value each run such
tests to find the best spray nozzles, spray methods, etc?? Mike -----Original

All I've been trying to say this for a while. Large cross
section pipes allow the little ones to travel slowely even under high
pressure. Transition into a smooth small diameter hose. 1/'2"
or 3/'8" The 'gun should be selected to have largest possible
innards so the velocity is low. Finally the jet. The jet can be a
straight ahead open hole. cut accross the hole is a vee cut that
allows the pressure to escape to form a flat fan shaped spray. No
sharp turns except that last one. Lower pressure will slow the
impact during this last part of the trip. But the spray
operator is going to want to have choices of spray shape. Dont know
how to handle that. I'm with

sprayer. This is fine for the microbes. The problem is the velocity at
which they hit things. That is where you need to be most careful. Splatted
