FWIW, a couple of years ago, pre-CT, I dumped about half a bag of 
spoiled horse feed (mixed grains, pelleted) into the compost bin. 
When I poked around in the bin later I found clumps of pellets woven 
together with funny white strands.

I suspect most grains would work if they are ground enough to present 
lots of surface area.
