So, are you saying that the appearance of mold implies
that the fungi have developed spores??
I was thinking that it would imply two different types of fungi are
present, no? If so, what indicates
that the fungi have developed spores?
And if spores are present, is it bad for the tea – or bad for our lungs –
both? Curious too, what effect could the spores have on us? Would a common dust mask work to help
prevent our breathing them in? Seems that loading spores into our teas would help propagate
the fungi into our soils even more so than the fungi itself. No? Aren’t spores basically fungi ‘seeds’ ? I’m shooting in the dark on this one though. Eileen, great question btw. -Mike Testing…. The
necessity of testing has been made clear.
As much as I see the benefit of testing tho … there’s a point to the
amount of testing the common gardener, or small farmer, can do. My composts change daily depending what
goes into it, I wouldn’t survive if I were to test every batch. I’m sorry to beat this with a blunt
toothpick, and I do understand why the cost of testing is what it is and why
testing is important, but feasibly (economically) there is a point where a gardener/farmer
has to hold back on some of the testing, and work off others examples and experience;
testing when necessary – thus this list.
Most of us just don’t have the business backing to pay for the tests. -----Original
Message----- Eileen,
it depends are what you are using. However, just to be safe, you should use the
compost when the white fuzzy is still white. Once it starts to develop spores,
you are getting into an area in which you should be careful....don't breathe in
the spores etc.......we know the white fuzzy Santa's hair is fine. Why push it?
If you do, then you really should test with SFI so you know what is going
on..... Cheers, Jeff
