How is decanting a representative sample cheating? I'm clear on the
idea of "taking samples from the bottom", but have never heard anyone
suggest that technique would be anything but misrepresentation.
Perhaps the folks having trouble duplicating the results using the
same stuff are not following the manufacturers instructions and are
not being forthcoming about their brew techniques?

keep the machine going, take five or so small samples and that is
what gets tested. If you are decanting the tea and taking samples
from the solids in the bottom, that is 'cheating' and gives
unrepresentational higher fungal numbers.....this is not the way to
go.

Who recommends bottom samples? Come on folks lets either set the
record straight or not make unfounded implications.

Please stop this flowform dicussion before I do. It has nothing to do with
compost tea until someone tests it three times and tells me it works.
This topic is better discussed in a Biodynamic forum, so if someone wants to
point to that site, go ahead. After that, prove it before you start touting
it here.

Being familiar with only standard

differentiates active and total but am eagerly waiting to learn.
Dennis:
In past correspondence responding to some of my questions, Elaine Ingham has
stated that the active bacteria stain, and the inactive, dead and anaerobic
bacteria don't. So, if I understand correctly, total includes active,
inactive, dead, and anaerobic.
Just trying to save Elaine from having to say it again.
Now she can say that I'm not listening if I got it wrong ;). You can check
the archives for this discussion -- it's been on here between now and July,
I believe.
