[compost_tea] Re: compost_tea / chloramines, ascorbic acid
Well, actually, this conversion is a little tricky since one needs to know =
the density of the material since we are converting from weight to volume. =
Considering that Ascorbic acid has a density of 1.65 grams/cubic centimete=
r and there are 4.92892 cubic centimeters/teaspoon, my calculations indicat=
e that approximately .15 teaspoons will provide 1.25 grams for the 50 gallo=
n batch of water. This equates to about 1/8 level teaspoon per 40 gallons o=
f water based on levels of concentration of monochlorimine consistent with =
municipally treated water. If it really smells like strong chlorine, this m=
ay indicate higher concentrations. There are ways to easily detect the amo=
unt of "locked up" monochlorimines in a manner similar to determining locke=
d up monochloromines in pool water. You can buy these strips in the same se=
ction as pool supplies. You might want to visit a pool supply store and spe=
ak with the clerk if you are not familiar with testing pool water for total=
chlorine and free chlorine (the difference should provide a close approxim=
ation of the level of locked-up monochlorimines)
In my humble opinion, if you toss in a flat to slightly rounded 1/8 teaspoo=
n of ascorbic acid in 50 gallons of water, let it sit for an hour before yo=
u add the compost, you should be good to go. Any monochlorimine that may b=
e left will be very minimal and the biomass should oxidize the remaining tr=
aces. And of course, the amounts can be directly scaled to the actual size =
of the batch.
Hope this helps
