Thank you for your response. Quite complex the method you describe.
The method proscribed by sprayer manufacturers actually is a great deal more
complex than the one I described. It entails counting the number of nozzles,
calculating total spray volume per minute, measuring your speed in km per
hour and then applying a formula. Not intuitive at all. Nowadays I have two
rigs that are fitted with GPS tracking and boom control which continuously
adjusts volume as your speed changes and as boom sections get shut or opened
by the GPS/boom control unit when you overlap swaths.

I guess that's the South African / international
units method of sprayer calibration.
In the American units systems we have a similar
approach called the 1/128th method. You measure the
distance between nozzels and use a chart to see how
how many feet you have to travel -- called the course
length. You drive across the course length and
record how many seconds it it took. Then you catch
liquid coming out of a nozzle for the same amount
of time, for exmaple 30 second. Since there are 128
fl oz per gallon, the ounces delivered per nozzle
in the time it takes to drive across the course length
is equal to the number of gallons per acre. Then you
divide that into your tank volume to see how many acres
you can treat per tank load.
