Northwest Lawn & Garden Pesticide Summit in Seattle – An Overview

COOL (Coalition of Organic Landscape Professionals) is partnering with the =
SafeLawns Foundation to present the Northwest Lawn & Garden Pesticide Summi=
t in Seattle on Saturday, June 4, 2011.

The goal of the summit is to create awareness of the health hazards and env=
ironmental degradation associated with pesticides, and to strategize ways t=
o reduce their use, including changes in policy and legislation. Our messag=
e: take action to reduce the cosmetic use of pesticides in our environment =
— especially where children are most at risk. Children are the most vuln=
erable to the effects of pesticides used on lawns and playfields. As a res=
ult they are most susceptible to hyperactivity and certain cancers which ha=
ve been linked to the use of pesticides.

For this summit we will present information on the dangers associated with =
the use of pesticides and we will hear from panelists about successful effo=
rts in the northwest and across the country to reduce the use of pesticides=
, and to enact pesticide policies, ordinances and statewide legislation. Ou=
r primary focus will be on lawn and garden pesticides — weed killers, ins=
ect killers and fungicides — used around homes, public parks and school g=
rounds. We will specifically examine New York State's Child Safe Playing Fi=
elds Act, which became law in 2010 and bans the use of chemical pesticides =
on school playing fields and day care playgrounds.

We hope to involve educators, medical professionals, scientists, environmen=
talists, government and school district staff, landscapers, union leaders, =
elected officials and concerned citizens for a day of inspiration and organ=
izational strategies. We are inviting participation from Washington, Orego=
n and Idaho.
