Mycorrhizal Fungi (did I get that right) are often destroyed by applied P,
well at least the association with the host

I have asked every mycologist I have every come across the same question "
in your view and from the peer reviewed data is helpful or harmful to the
symbiotic relationship with plants and trees to apply P" in every instance
they have said that it was detrimental, I have probably asked 15 to 18. Once
the plant has sufficient P it no longer needs the association with the fungi
(to be very simplistic) I am sure there are exceptions, maybe with ericoid
or 100's of others

I have been struggling with getting all the details sorted out on the whole
compost tea and extract business, so take this with a grain of salt please.

 

In the Compost Tea Brewers Manual it mentions that you can add mycorrhizae
to tea.

 

some details on that.

 

1. use micronized (soluble) mycorrhizae...if you are not adding it to the
tea but mixing with soil and roots or seeds the granular is often higher
quality with respect to propagules and hardiness

 

2. if you add mycorrhizae, add them just before application at the end of
the brew cycle. this will keep them from germinating in the brew and as
spores they are more tolerant to various conditions

 

3. you need to get the mycorrhizae into the root zone and onto the roots of
the plants. I think it will bind to organic matter, so application would be
to spray it directly on roots as you're planting (or dipping bare root trees
in the tea) or to inject it into the root zone. I'm not sure how well a
soil drench works...maybe on shallow rooted plants?

 

4. The spores tend to settle out in the brewer in my experience...if you
can keep agitation during application this might help...not sure what else
to do about this.

 

if you are in western US Reforestation Technologies Inc (RTI) sells several
types of mycorrhizae and might be worth contacting.

 

I also heard that mycorrhizae like rock Phosphate and that people have
concentrated their own by burying perforated plastic bottles filled with
rock P in areas where mycorrhizae are likely to be abundant ( or tested to
be abundant) then collect these after a year and apply them to their plants
or fields...
