Kirk,
I have found in order for compost to applied with mechanical spreading equi=
pment, It has to 'flow' through the machine and also not 'bridge ' over con=
veyors, or cake excessively around moving parts. I use an 'Eco-Spreader'. A=
n ideal compost for spreading this way needs to be quite dry. Some people o=
vercome the moisture and consistency problem by adding a lot of sand to the=
compost to give it better flow characteristics, but I feel spreading any s=
ignificant percentage of sand is undesirable for I am usually spreading the=
compost on sandy soil. Also, sand is comparatively heavy so it adds labor =
cost, and I can carry less per load to where it is applied.

Jimmy,

I don't understand why the compost would have to be dry. Seems to me puttin=
g a moist compost down, with seeds, is better than dry. Seeds need moisture=
to germinate, the soil is likely parched, and the sun will dry it out pret=
ty quick if that's actually needed. Rain would be great.

Agree with Steve that you can trust the land to come back, too. I can imagi=
ne quite a few folks there who can't wait that long to get back in producti=
on, though. Knowing something about the Tejas fires and drought, I wish the=
m the best.
