Gail a little natural sugar has it's place, in brewing specific microbes fo=
r specific applications,
however in my opinion if you are using GOOD QUALITY compost/vermicompost &/=
or undisturbed woodland leaf litter then there should be more than enough n=
utrient to multiply the microheard and more importantly retain a balance of=
microbe types (diversity). Simply adding compost to water motivates microb=
es by improving their ability to cover much more territory & agitating it d=
evelops the beneficial microbes. We suffer with regular power cuts here dur=
ing which time one has to occasionally stir by hand to complete a batch, I =
have found my teas going anaerobic quicker in these circumstances when suga=
r/molasses is used. Cut down your sugar qtys to a quarter of what is recomm=
ended then compare/monitor the results.
