Lime sulphur is an old recipe. I don´t think that the chemistry
behind it is that simple. I was talking to a PhD in Chemistry that
helped develop a medium size plant for the manufacture of this
red liquid and he was saying that there are may aspects specially
on the mode of action in the plants that are not well understood.
It almost like an alchemy.
This old red liquid is helping brazilian citrus industry a lot. Millions
of Dollars are being saved in dangerous petro-poisons for the
desperation
of several mutinational companies.

Hi Elaine
Lime sulfur - calcium polysulfide - made by boiling calcium hydroxide
3moles
and elemental sulfur 12moles, in water gets calcium pentasulfide CaS5
2moles, calcium thiosulfate CaS2O3 1mole, and water H2O 3moles, then add
some cane sugar as a stabiliser and evaporate the water for a dry
product.
(I pinched this info from an old post on BDnow list) Now our fertiliser
man
takes this and has a microbe that just loves to munch on it - takes a
year
to convert - and if he did know what was going on in that heap he would
not
tell a soul. (I think he knows)
Most of us know of raw lime sulphur as a particularly stinky greenish
yellow
brew sprayed on fruit trees to kill fungus? - I remember my dad doing
this
and also helping him spray cattle for (I think) mange. It stunk like the
fires of hell, but seemed to work, I'm glad I was not one of the cows
tho.
And I dont think the microbes in compost tea would like it very much.
There are a number of people in the eco fertiliser business claiming
biodigestion as a sales pitch and all some of them are doing is taking
raw
stuff (like sulfur or rock phosphate and spraying on a bit of liquid
fish or
compost tea type liquid, mixing it in and selling the result. How
effective
is this ? probably hugely variable!
 Cheers all
