Re: [compost_tea] Brew length with 500
The organisms grow just as fast in 500 gal as in 200 gal, or 50 or 5. And
that's what we're after, organism growth. The compost is just a source of
the organisms, and thus, at 500 gal, the inoculum can be less. The organisms
grow rapidly, as long as the soluble nutrients from the compost, and from the
added food resources, give them the right foods to grow.
Talk with Ron Stewart at Columbia Gorge Organics in Hood River about the bag
material. I like nylon, as in a laundry bag, or a paint strainer bag.
Opening size in the bag needs to be around 400 micrometers. Felt holds up
the critters in the fabric and is a perfect place for mildew to get going.
Make sure the aeration is ok in hte brewer by measunring oxygen through the
whole tea brew. The critical hours are 14 to 20 hours after start, as long
as temperature is reasonable and the orgnaisms are growing.
