Re: [compost_tea] Mildew
Jody,
I do not have any latest research however I have clients who are using CT to
control Powdery in their vineyards and in strawberries (I manufacture CT).
It is still early days as we have been using the CT in vineyards since the
beginning of spring. One of the vineyards has used 3 applications on a
weekly basis, the last one will be 14 days between applications (too far
apart) however he was away for one of the batches. He has found no trace of
PM as yet. Another grower used the CT on vines that had very high levels PM
last year and had a outbreak of PM last week, he will control this with
Sulphur and DMI. This was disappointing however when I looked at the number
of sprays he had used, there had been over 14 days between sprays. The
nature of PM is such that it is easiest to control using preventative sprays
on a regular basis (8 to 10 days), in other words spray when there is no
evidence of disease. PM is slow growing however if it is allowed to reach
'critical mass' it can 'explode' in the vineyard. Regular scouting for the
disease is an important part of the management strategy.
One of the strawberry growers has used it since winter (Australia) on a
regular basis to control Rhizoctonia (CT in the drip) as well as over the
top weekly to control PM and Botrytis. He had a out break early on (coming
out of winter) and used 2 sprays of chemicals to control the PM then
switched back to CT weekly. No sign of PM since, he has not used CT on top
for over 14 days (against my advice) and is very confident of having good
control. He reports that this is the best his plants have ever been at this
stage in the season and has had excellent production with more fruit coming
through for further production (this is due mainly to an excellent pre plant
program using biological farming techniques). He is very happy with the
control he is getting.
I too would appreciate any latest research information re CT to control PM
especially from vineyard managers and growers who are presently using CT in
their vineyards.
Regards Mike H.
