Re: [compost_tea] shaggy manes

Hi Susan -

It is more likely that the fungal spores were there, but did not have the right foods to grow previously.  Compost can have Coprinus spores, but it is not common that I am aware of.

Probable scenario:  A squirrel or vole or shrew ate a fruiting structure of the Coprinus last spring and left a little fecal pile next to your drive.  Small mammals love to eat fungi, and they then leave the spores whereever they defecate over the next few days.  Because you fed the fung al spores the fungal foods in the compost tea, the spores germinated and grew all summer, so now, when the temperature and moisture is right, the fungus happily grew, and produced the mushrooms  for you..

Enjoy!
